It isn't hard to enjoy the scenery on our beautiful campus. With a Horticulturist and an eight member staff something is always blooming, always changing.

Responsibility for landscaping and maintaining the 240 plus acres that make up Armstrong Atlantic State University is no small task. In 2001 the campus was established as an Arboretum. Biology classes can be found studying the flora and fauna and the Elderhostel program has included a walking tour of campus gardens. Our resident Horticulturist is also available for small group tours if arrangements are made in advance.

Maintenance needs as basic as grass cutting or as complex as landscape design are a normal part of every day activities. Irrigation systems are being installed across campus to improve means of supplying and conserving water to grass areas and flower beds. You will find most plants labeled with both common and latin names to provide interest to passerbys. Trial beds erected near the side entrance of the Bookstore showcase plants new to the nursery industry.

In 2004 construction began on the newest addition to the campus landscape. Located between Solms Hall and Hawes Hall, the International Gardens houses plants native to Australia, Africa, South America, Europe and Asia. The European Plaza's amphitheater is the center piece of the gardens. Planting has also been done in the Australia and South America sections. Included in Australia's selections are 20 species of Eucalyptus. Work is now completed on the Asian teahouse and rock garden.
